The team at Carmona Smiles is dedicated to the comfort of our patients. Children and teens can feel anxious about dental treatments, and we want to do everything possible to make visiting the dentist a positive experience.
Sedation dentistry involves the use of mild sedatives to manage anxiety while your child or teen receives dental care. Sedation is also useful when several procedures will be done at the same appointment, if the child has special needs, or if the patient has a strong “gag” reflex. Sedation medication does not control pain, but local anesthesia can be used simultaneously.
Laughing gas is a very safe, mild sedative that allows your child to remain relaxed during a dental procedure. This sedative is given with the use of a special mask which carries oxygen mixed with the medication. Your child will be asked to breathe through their nose. The patient will notice a faint, sweet smell. Laughing gas takes effect quickly - usually within about five minutes. The mask is worn, and the laughing gas is breathed in until the procedure is done. Your child will be awake and aware the whole time, but they will experience a happy and comfortable feeling while their dental work is being completed. When the procedure is over, the laughing gas will be turned off, and your child will breathe in oxygen for a few minutes to clear out any remaining gas. There will be no lingering side effects.
Whether your child is coming in for a regular checkup, a restoration, or something more serious, we want to do everything possible to ensure that the experience is comfortable and pleasant. We believe that early dental care builds a foundation for a lifetime of good oral health, and we are proud to be a part of it!
